island pools

Undergraduate Design Studio

Located South of Toronto, the Toronto Islands is a getaway from the busy bustling lifestyle of the city. Located to the southern tip, the island pools is an inward looking project that caters a journey for the individual. A series of digging and building mounds creates a landscape where the user is encouraged to walk around on a journey from tip to end of the site.

Courtyards and open air spaces create a variety of experiences on the walking journey, glimpses around the corner into a swimming pool, and open air theater, a courtyard. Elevational changes block and cater views to the water, allowing the swimmer to reach the end of the site and come to an open air garden on the water.

Attention to energy saving initiatives allow the buildings to function at 150 KwH/m2/year. Closed loop heat pumps and wall construction made of reinforced and heavy retaining wall enforce and insulate the buildings.

Video Animation made to supplement studio project to depict a timeline of a day at the Island Pools. Rendered in Lumion.
